The newest trends in carpet

Colleen

Having been in the flooring business for a few years now, I tend to show my clients the types of carpet that has stood the test of time, and not some flash in the pan trend that seems to wane after a few months. Classic styles and materials seem to be timeless. There are several types of carpet that hold up well to the rigors of daily life with children, husbands, pets, and the occasional dinner party or holiday get together;

Frieze

This type of carpet has a high twist level and is very textured. Frieze carpet is great for super high traffic areas and stairways, due to its ability to "bounce back" from above average use. It also minimizes the appearance of footprints and vacuum marks.

Loop pile (Berber)

Berber carpet is the oldest form of carpet known to man, dating back to the days of ancient Mesopotamia. Known for its appearance retention qualities, it is also the prevailing format for most commercial styles being used today. Loop pile carpet retains it's shape better than it's cut pile contemporaries due to that fact that the ends will not "untwist" because the yarn completes the circuit and reattaches to the backing. Loop styles are often called Berber, but true Berbers have a fleck of a different color, which also makes them more forgiving for active families.

All Wool Carpets

Any type of wool carpet

whether cut pile or loop is fantastic for heavy traffic applications. The natural properties of wool make it highly resilient, more so than any fiber known to man. Wool is also easily maintained. Because wool has high moisture content, it keeps spills soluble and allows time for you to get up what gravity has forced down. Another little known fact is that wool carpet is nearly 100% fire resistant. Aircraft manufacturers have used wool carpet in commercial airplanes for years due to its ability to snuff out embers before they become flames. This could be useful in Family rooms with wood stoves or fireplaces.

Hopefully these tidbits of information prove helpful in your search for the perfect carpet. I am eager to show you these and many other styles when you visit me in either Ann Arbor or the Chelsea showroom. Please feel free to call anytime to make an appointment.
